Tolkien et les Sept Arts


Grammaire
Très fameusement, John Ronald avait le goût de ne pas seulement apprendre des grammaires existantes mais aussi d'en inventer des non-existantes. Il croyait que le passe-temps était rare, mais il croyait avoir trouvé une âme soeur le jour où dans les campements militaires de la Guerre contre Prusse il entendit un homme dire "je crois que je vais exprimer l'accusatif avec une préposition".

Les grammaires de Quenya et de Sindarin ont servi comme parti de l'arrière-fonds de ses récits à échelle épique. Le passage des glâces de Helcaraxe ou la forêt de Nanduhirion ... (à prononcer chaque lettre comme en Latin - Helcaraxe est en Quenya et Nanduhirion en Sindarin).

Dialectique
Il croyait fermement que le récit était mieux et plus fantastique pour avoir une logique cohérente interne. Il s'y appliquait aussi. En plus il débusque la mauvaise logique des réflexes du malin dans ses récits ... elle coincide souvent avec la mauvaise logique des révolutionnaires, que ce soit anticléricaux ou que ce soit des transhumanistes.

Rhétorique
Pas mal des dialogues donnent en passant des positions clefs, de ses charactères bons comme des mauvais, exprimées en très sollenelle rhétorique. Il n'est pas insensible à la rhétorique de la fidélité féodale non plus.

Arithmétique
Il a eu l'empathie avec les gens ayant six doigts de leur donner un système d'arithmétique ... notons qu'il ne fait pas partie des récits publiés, on le trouve dans les lexiques tolkienesques.

À part ça, oui, il sait très bien compter, que ce soit le nombre de générations dans une généalogie qu'il construit ou que ce soit le nombre de jours une certaine traversée prend à pied en courant, à pied en marchant ou à cheval.

Musique
St Augustin d'Hippone comptait comme faisant partie de la musique les formes de vers. Tolkien y a ajouté une ou deux.

Prenons la strophe ambrosienne, faisons rimer les lignes deux et quatre, peut-être aussi la une. Divisons la ligne trois en deux moitiés que riment ... voila une strophe de Tolkien.

Et la musique joue une tellement grande rôle dans son imaginaire. Aïnulindale donne une méditation quasi musicale sur De Genesis ad Litteram Libri Duodecim livre 5-6 (la fameuse et souvent de nos jours mal interprêtée non-litéralité des six jours chez St Augustin) avec un verset de Job.

Géométrie
Notre auteur faisait lui-même ou en collaboration avec son fils Christopher les cartes de son monde imaginaire. Et il construisit les histoires de manière que la carte devienne rélévante aussi. Les maisons - que ce soit les trous de hobbits ou les palais et les villes (Minas Tirith est modelé sur Mont St Michel).

Astronomie
Il semble avoir considéré la constellation Orion comme un "guardien" contre le mal. [Si quelque association il y a entre Nimrod et Orion, alors ça ne veut nullement dire que les étoiles d'Orion soient mauvaises comme Nimrod est mauvais. Le mal n'a pas de place si haut que ça. - Mais ceci on ne peut pas trouver directement chez Tolkien. - Plutôt qu'elles font attention à ce qui lui concerne, pour avertir de lui.] Chez Tolkien cette constellation s'appelle Menelmacar - porteur de glaive (macar) du ciel (menel).

Rappelons qu'il a "inventé" (ou revalorisé pour ses histoires) deux cosmologies (pour avant et après un cataclysme) dont la première mais non la deuxième a une terre plate et les deux une terre au centre de l'univers. Rappelons qu'il a inventé (ou revalorisé ne fût-ce que pour ses histoires) la conception médiévale que les planètes sont des boules de feu ou assez pareil menées par des êtres angéliques. Et notons, en passant, qu'au Moyen Âge ceci n'était nullement une vue hérétique, mais au contraire assez normale à la Sorbonne aux temps de l'évêque Tempier et de Sts Thomas d'Aquin et Bonaventure et Maître Albert aussi. Que je sache, elle n'a jamais, grand jamais été condamnée par l'église.

ascii code gematria

I was hearing Chuck Missler say that if the Antichrist is identified by gematria, it would be the only time the Holy Spirit used that method. But something similar can be said for astrology and the Magi - even if it were incorrect, even if the Magi in question were not real astrologers but waiting for that particular star only and watching for no other stars, and waiting for it on orders of the prophet Balaam (a k a Bileam). He made a point there are different kinds of gematria and if you torture the facts long enough they will yield. Ragil is the one in which you add up the number values of the letters and nothing else.

Now, on top of Hebrew and Greek alphabet, our day has seen a new gematria become widely known and therefore possible. In Roman Numerals only few of the letters have number values - M D C L X V I which add up to 1666 by the way - which is why Latin Alphabet has been seen as irrelevant for gematria compared to Hebrew. S has the value 1/2 and is therefore irrelevant unless you get two s. On the other hand I can also be the number value of J, V of U, as for W one can probably make it V + V. There have been attempts to make artificially a gematria on Latin alphabet by making numbers 1-9 correspond to first nine letters and 10-90 to next nine letters, as in Greek and Hebrew. But this has never been the way arithmetic outside gematria has been noted by people writing in the Latin alphabet, so it is a bit hard to make number values stick.

Our day has seen a new set of number values attached to Latin Alphabet in its English variety. A is 65 or 0065. B is 66. C is 67. Z is 90. Certain national alphabets have other letters too, like Swedish Å, 197, or French Ç, 199. Do you see what I mean? Now, there is a reason why I use majuscules here. Minuscules a - z are not 65-90 but far higher numbers, 97 - 122. These are lower than the ascii values for special characters, but of those there are not that many in each word, besides it would be bad spelling to rewrite them in number values of the original letters. So, let's add up some.

I wanted to know if I am clean myself first. It seems I am (not tried minuscules yet and looking for multiples of that bad number). LUNDAHL is 520. HANS is 298. GEORG is 372. HANS and GEORG add up to 670 - so I am in a sense "neighbour of the beast" if you see what I mean. And I have been living in bad neighbourhoods lots of parts of my life up to now, so that has come true a bit. I wonder if another Hans-Georg, namely Gadamer, is not enjoying that neighbourhood more than I. If I ad ascii values for MIKAEL 435 and ELIZUR 475 I get a total of 2100 (or if I spell it ELITZUR, then 2184). That is not divisible by 37 or its products or by 18 and its products. I even tried seeing if the sums could be used as ascii code for letters adding up to the bad number by some other gematria. Alt + 0520 gave no sign. The sums for my given names are here: *t³Û. The sum of HANS GEORG as 670 is ž. Now, let us see what some other guys get.

VLADIMIR is 600. PUTIN is 400. Adds up to 1000, have not taken into account his patronymic Vladimirovich. Here is some for Obama:

Now, for the man called François Hollande, the C with cédille even in the upper case (199, remember) sums gives a name even for just François which is too large: 729. I have not tried adding up total to look for multiples.

There is another Francis, if he be Pope. His name before the conclave, if such it was, was Jorge Bergoglio. Jorge, no problem. 375. But, Bergoglio, alas: 666.* That is not the case with Ratzinger, which is 694. If both are / were Popes, neither is concerned, because the name before God is the Papal name. If neither is / was Pope, Ratzinger is not concerned, but Bergoglio is. If Ratzinger was Pope, maybe he still is, and his resignation is invalid. That is however a chapter in itself even apart from gematria.

[*Rechecking, it seems to be 665!]

Now, a Pope did give a warning about gematria in the context, not to look for the name sum, since many names add up (in Classic Greek gematria) to 666, but to the one who does the deeds of Antichrist. That also is quite another than ascii code gematria.

PS, Chuck Missler was a bit wrong. David seems to be Daleth Vav Daleth = 14. Unless I misunderstood Jonathan Sarfati on something. King David was 14th descendant from Abraham. Christ Jesus was the third time 14th generation from Abraham, if you discount three bad generations (husband, son, and grandson of Athaliah). And today's Saint wrote a Gospel where the first chapter spells that out./HGL

PPPS, I checked with minuscules (a-z = 97 - 122 or each minuscule has a number value 32 units bigger than the majuscule) for Jorge Mario Bergoglio. It gave 1928. Just exactly 70 = capital F away from three times the bad number. Important update, 7-XII-2013: rechecked, it gave 1929. This is now making me recheck the calculations all over.

PPPPS, I came across a site that revived the old calumny against the Papacy that the Papal title "Vicarius Filii Dei" adds up to 666 in Roman Numerals. Those words do add up, but do not form a papal title. And the real Papal titles "Vicarius Christi" and "Servus Servorum Dei" do not add up to that number. My suspicion is neither with Papacy nor with Jesuits as such - but with the man.

Update: I found the Hebrew Letter Gematria Nimrod Ben Kush = 666.

I may not like Bergoglio, I may deeply mistrust him, but I can recall that at least two Popes were called after the Antichristians afflicting them. Pius IX was called "Crux de Cruce" meaning the House of Savoy (which has a Cross in its heraldry) caused him a great Cross or affliction (in 1870). Similarily an earlier Pius (VI or VII) was called Aquila Rapax because Napoleon afflicted him. But if he is not a real Pope, he could be connected in the future to Nimrod Ben Kush./HGL

Si je viens de completer en trois jours trois essais avec les trois arts du trivium, maintenant au quadrivium, qui commence avec l'arithmétique. Elle concerne les nombres (αριθμοι, numeri, Anzahle, aantallen, antal ...) dont 1 n'est que le début et ensuite 2, 3, 4, 5 ... Comme j'espère que vous savez déjà, π n'est pas un nombre, c'est une rélation entre l'autre forme de quantité, entre les grandeurs, en occurrence une rélation constante entre chaque périphérie (π abrège περιφερεια dont notre périphérie) et chaque diamètre de chaque cercle (strictement planaire) parfait.* Mais les nombres - ce sont les entiers, ce sont là le contenu de l'arithmétique.

Une mesure est une chose qu'on peut avoir à moitié, un nombre ne l'est pas. Et si on décompte les pizzas? Bon, pour qu'un ait une pizza et demie, il faut que la pizza dont il a la demie soit découpée en deux moitiés de pizza. Le nombre compte les choses existantes. On coupe une pizza - et la pizza cesse d'exister en tant qu'entière pizza, commencent à exister deux moitiés de pizza. Ce sont les deux moitiés de pizza qui désormais existent. La pizza reste "unité de comptage" ce qui est presque aussi flou et géométrique que l'unité de mesure. Mais l'arithmétique se concerne avec les choses en entière. Quitte à l'abuser aussi pour les ex-choses retenues comme unités de comptage pour les morceaux qui en étaient parties.

Et pour la prudence, le concept d'intégrité est essentiel.

C'est aussi parce que les Septs Arts sont en partie au moins une légation de St Augustin (qui, ayant horreur de la superstition astrologique voulait en avoir Philosophie au lieu d'Astronomie comme Septième Art des Arts Libéraux - non à confondre avec Septième et Neuvième arts dans les Beaux-Arts, biensûr) et il avait (que ceci soit de lui ou de son inspiration plutôt indirecte) le sens de l'allégorie.

Là où Notre Seigneur parle de prudence, il énumère souvent. C'est vrai, chez les vierges sages et sottes, il s'agit de l'huile, qui n'est pas comptable mais mésurable et donc appartient plutôt à la géométrie. Mais il y a dedans 5 vierges sages et 5 vierges sottes. Chez les serviteurs, celui qui enterrait son talent (bonne raison de ne pas enterrer le mien d'écrivain!) aurait dû le doubler ... ce qui est une opération à porté de l'arithmétique. Chez le roi et chez l'architecte, il était très explicitement question de compter les ressources. Un roi vaincu en guerre ou un architecte qui laisse sa tour non finie (comme Nimrod à Babel, Notre Seigneur l'avait vu et trouvé sans les ressources pour une tour vers le ciel et il l'avait puni et ridiculisé par la confusion des langues, oui, après son Incarnation à Bethléhem il se souvenait quand même de ça et il en parlait à ses disciples et à ses audieteurs), ce sont des rois et architectes qui ont oublié de compter les ressources ... correctement.

Pensons à ces évolutionnistes selon qui un petit changement marginel là et un autre par ci peuvent s'ajouter imperceptiblement à un changement beaucoup plus radical. Mais les chromosomes, ce sont des unités, ce sont des entiers, pour que 48 chromosomes deviennent 50 (et audelà 52, 54 ...) on ne peut pas attendre une lente cumulation pendant mille générations. Il n'y a pas de chromosomes à moitié ou à quart ou à huitième, il n'y a que des chromosomes à part entière. Et un nombre changé peut déclencher le système immunitaire de la mère et faire échouer la gestation, chez les mammifères. Ceux qui comptent sur le gradualisme ont - comme le pauvre Bergson, qui en est devenu philosophe évolutionniste, oh si triste! - oublié de compter en entiers.

Ou pensons aux tyrans.

Hitler, avait-il compté que Russie, Chine et États-Unis s'uniéreront contre lui et ses alliés? Trotski et Staline avaient-ils compté sur la possibilité qu'un arriviste du parti athée, comme Gorbatchev, reste quelque part pieux envers une mère restée chrétienne? Le tyran chinois qui ordonnait le massacre de Tian An Men en 1989, avait-il compté qu'un an plus tard un Russe à Moscou allait braver un tank quasiment "vas-y connard, encore un Tian An Men si tu oses" ... et que l'homme dans le tank n'allait pas oser cette impiété? Gorbatchev lui-même avait-il compté sur l'indignation qui donna lieu à la Révolution qui chantait, entre le Sud de la Lithuanie et le Nord d'Estonie, en proteste envers les paysages pourris par tant de suie de charbon produite en vue d'augmenter des denrés ... dont la qualité totale baissait grâce à cette suie? Et son prédécesseur avait-il compté sur le fait que ses chanteurs folkloriques des pays baltiques allaient trouver d'autres soviétiques tout aussi objectionnables par le fait de pollution des paysages que l'armée états-unisienne apparaissait à cause de la guerre de Nam ... aux yeux même des gens sur lesquels il comptait pour la victoire de son allié plus que pourri, Ho Chi Minh? Et que les uns protesteurs allaient chercher inspiration chez les autres, dans la fille qui tende une fleur vers les flics sur une photo archi-connue. Car ce symbolisme là n'était pas pour rien dans la Révolution qui chantait.

Mais ce ne sont pas juste les tyrans qui peuvent se tromper dans les calculs. Leurs victimes se trompent parfois aussi.

Si le peuple suédois avait en 1527 compté qu'il fallait soutenir les pieuses femmes de Sigtuna qui s'étaient unies paisiblement autour de l'église à l'époque paroissiale, et qu'il ne suffisait pas avec cette proteste pieuse et paisible, mais qu'il allait falloir lutter un peu plus hardiment que ça pour arrêter les impiétés du nouveau tyran, il aurait encore pu être arrêté et le catholicisme suédois encore sauvé. Notre première imprimérie - autre art connexe à l'arithmétique, car les types des lettres comme les perles sur un patrenôtrier sont des entiers - notre première imprimérie avait publié (sous les Carthusiens) un livre en suédois sur l'art de prier le Saint Rosaire de la Bienheureuse Vierge Marie. Qu'il y ait des bons ou des mauvais dans chaque religion une fois qu'il y a plein de gens qui y sont depuis la naissance, c'est naturel. Les bons Musulmans qu'il y a de nos jours ne feront pas de Mahomet un martyr. Les mauvais Catholiques qu'il y a de nos jours (et dont je ne suis pas le meilleur) ne feront pas des Apôtres des sybarites, ni de Notre Seigneur. Mais c'est au début d'une religion que la qualité des hommes compte.

La religion chrétienne a commencé l'an 33 depuis la Naissance du Seigneur (certains disent que c'était l'an 29 de l'ère commune, selon le calcul de Denis le Petit et qu'il sétait trompé sur la chronologie de Bethlehem: qu'importe, tant que le texte biblique ne se trompe pas) avec des martyrs comme Étienne Proto-Martyr. La religion protestante en Suède commence 1527 (dix ans après les thèses clouées sur la porte de l'église de Wittenberg, 7 ans depuis l'excommunication de Luther et de la Suède les deux en 1520, mais lui pour hérésie, nous à l'époque juste pour schisme, l'acte d'avoir déposé illégalement l'archévêque) avec des saccages d'églises, avec une confiscation d'imprimérie, et bientôt avec des massacres et exécutions de catholiques restés loyaux envers la vérité catholique.

Chesterton disait que les instigateurs laïcs, derrière la Réforme ou si-dite telle ecclésiale étaient aussi les ennemis de la petite propriété. Regardons autour de nous en France, s'il y a des saccageurs d'églises.

Peut-être une idée de posséder une maison ou un camion ou roulotte pleinement au lieu de louer d'un autre?

Avoir une entreprise quelque part sou prétexte de louer l'apartement pour y vivre c'est une chose. Mais avoir le siège social là où on vit me paraît plutôt normal.

Et les bailleurs ne permettent pas ça? Répression politique ou non (Frigide Barjot est en position de le soupçonner, vu son engagement récent dans la Manif Pour Tous), c'est certes une répression grave aux activités économiques des petits acteurs.

À propos ça: vous connaissez la petite laiterie, entre autres productrice de yaourt en Île de France? Après une grêve des 50 employés ou employées (je ne sais pas si c'était juste des femmes ou aussi des hommes) elle est en liquidation. Je ne sais pas si la grêve commençait avant ou après les dettes de l'entrepreneur, mais elle les a empirées.

Faire une grêve, c'est mieux fait pour une grande entreprise, qui peut se permettre de perdre un peu et qui peut aussi se permettre d'ajuster les choses après pour finir la grêve avec un accord. Et après la liquidation, les grêvistes feront quoi? Racheteront-ils la laiterie qu'ils ou qu'elles ont aidée à ruiner ou seront-elles à la recherche de travail?

Dans les rayons j'avais trouvé le yaourt de Danone, de Leader Price, de Monoprix, de St Malo ... mais pas celui de Paris Lait - comment ça se fait?

La distribution s'était-elle mise ensemble pour boycotter Paris Lait, ou quoi? Je ne fais que demander. En tant que grand aficionado de yaourt, j'ai un interêt personnel dedans.

Retournons à Jalons et les Tellenne:

Jalons reversait au couple environ 9.000 euros par an au titre de la sous-location, selon une source proche du dossier.

La RIVP assure avoir apris en avril par la presse que Jalons était domicilié à l'adresse personnelle de Mme Barjot.


Est-ce la bureacratie française qui a obligé les Tellenne à enrégistrer Jalons comme sous-locataire au dépit du contrat, ou est-ce que ce sont les bailleurs qui ont changé de point de vue (peut-être moyennant un changement de bureacrate)? Ou a-t-on peut-être joué sur les deux côtés pour avoir une croche dans le nez des Tellenne? La loge serait du point de vue d'organisation sécrète capable de concerter une telle préparation (qui aurait biensûr pu ne jamais être sautée en acte) et elle est capable du point de vue de la morale de sauter une telle préparation pour faire du mal à des gens comme ... l'organisatrice de la Manif Pour Tous.

Une fois que l'excitation des manifestants est un peu attristée et sous sordine, vue la honte du jour de St George cette année et vue la honte de la mairie de Montpellier, on compte que les Tellenne n'auront pas suffisemment de soutien pour se bien tenir dans cette affaire ... et si en même temps on débarasse les grandes entreprises des compétiteurs "déloyaux" qui font leurs propres entreprises à maison, ça ne les gêne pas. Au cas au on tomberait sur un protégé ou ami, on pourra biensûr faire une petite exception.

Que les bénéficiaires pourront avoir à payer plus tard, ou sinon, avoir à perdre dans le pire moment. Cette franc-maçonnerie est née 1717, deux cents ans après les quatre réformations (dont celle de Wittenberg allait s'abbattre sur la Suède et dont celle d'Italie, tôt réfugié en Pologne et ensuite chassée de là aussi, n'a pas donné l'organisation de la maçonnerie, plutôt redevables à des loges de bâtisseurs et des Templiers refugiés après 1313, mais partie de leur idéologie). Voilà l'ennemi. Comptez bien les ressources avant d'entreprendre une campagne - mais aussi quelles ressources resteront si on n'en entreprend pas. Comptez pas qu'ils auront oubliés les leçons qui les ont perdu des pouvoirs dans le passé de ne pas avoir compris en bon temps.

PS, j'allais presque oublier l'inspiration primaire de faire un article sur l'arithmétique et la prudence, mais c'est que j'ai vu un agent de la SNCF rendre un très bon service à une cliente en chaise roulante. Il la menait de la Gare, probablement du Train même, au Taxi. Je ne suis pas en position moi-même de dire aux demunis de toujours payer les tickets, mais aux autres il convient de dire que le prix de trajet est utile pour des salaires à des gens qui se rendent utiles./HGL

*Chaque cercle parfait est planaire quelque part. Assumons pour la discussion que le cercle polaire est un cercle parfait (il ne l'est peut-être pas), sa périphérie est sur les endroits de la surface de la Terre où l'on trouve "le cercle polaire" sur la carte (donc, le cercle serait parfait s'il s'agissait de l'hauteur de la mer partout, ce qui n'est pas le cas en Suède et Norvège par exemple). Par contre, son diamètre n'est pas à tracer sur la calotte, mais sur le découpé théorique si la calotte était enlevée et si restait une superficie de cercle parfaitement plat audelà du cercle polaire. Ce qui n'est heureusement pas le cas.

Voor die traditionele opvatting van wiskunde

Ik kijk een beetje op die wikipediaen kreeg die moderne opvatting (want die voormoderne of traditionele is weiniger bekant):

In de wiskunde worden de getallen doorgaans ingedeeld in verschillende verzamelingen. De eenvoudigste getallen zijn natuurlijke getallen {0, 1, 2 ...}, voorgesteld door de verzameling "N". De natuurlijke getallen zijn een deelverzameling van de gehele getallen "Z" die, naast de positieve gehele of natuurlijke getallen, ook de negatieve gehele getallen bevat. Deze verzameling kan uitgebreid worden met de getallen die enkel als breuk te schrijven zijn: deze verzameling van rationale getallen wordt voorgesteld als "Q". De verzameling van rationale getallen die een eindige decimale voorstelling hebben, worden decimale fracties of decimale getallen genoemd, soms weergegeven met "D".

Er zijn getallen, zoals π, de wortel uit twee en het getal e, die niet in breukvorm te schrijven zijn; zij vormen de irrationale getallen. Rationale en irrationale getallen vormen samen de verzameling van reële getallen, voorgesteld door "R". Tenslotte kan deze verzameling nog uitgebreid worden tot de complexe getallen zodat alle algebraïsche vergelijkingen oplosbaar zijn. Deze laatste verzameling wordt voorgesteld door "C".

Dit is een valsche en moderne voorstelling van wiskunde.

Traditioneel gezien zijn aantallen geen deelmengsel van rationelle of reëlle getallen.

Arithmetiek is die kunde van aantallen. Muziek is die kunde van proportionen tuschen die aantallen. Geometrie is die kunde van grootheiden - een andere typus van hoeveelheiden daan die aantallen. En ook van hun proportien. π is een proportie die slechts existeeren kan tuschen grootheiden, noeiet tuschen aantallen. Datselfde is ook waar van die wortel van twee en van die eulersche getal.

Maar die waarden van die arithmetische getallen zijn ook enkelte van die waarden van die geometrische relatieve grootheiden. Elk grootheid kan slechts dan wiskundlijk worden behandelt als zie een is of als zie relatief is aan een aandere grootheid die een is. En die relatië kan goed zamenvallen mee een aantal - bijvoorbeeld 3:1 die zamvalt mee 3 - een ook niet zamenvallen mee een aantal - bijvoorbeeld π of die wortel van twee, die zijn die relatieve grootheiden van die cirkel als "een" is die grootheid (als basis van relatiën) van die diameter en ook die relatieve grootheid van die diagonaal van een vierkant als "een" is die zijd.

Al die musikalischen proportiës kunnen ook in aantallen existeeren, maar niet al die geometrische proporties. Maar een proportie tuschen aantallen is ontologisch verschillig van die proportie tuschen grootheiden. Zelfs als die waarde dezelfde is.

Nul een negatieve getallen zijn geen aantallen, maar "relatieve aantallen". Als men heefd een wirkelijk aantal kan men een relatië toevoegen: en die relatië kan positiev of negatiev of nul zijn. Maar zie is kleiner als die aantal van die men uitgaat. Toevoegen of wegnamen, men kan dit slechts mee een kleinere relatië als dit waarop men toevoegt of waarvan men wegnoemt. Romeinsche cifferen duiten het heel goed aan. VII of V of IIV gaan. IIIIIV of VIIIII, dit gaat niet. En als VIIIIII kan corrigeert worden in XI (die gaat), dan is IIIIIIV heel valsch en kan niet corrigeert werden. Waar woord die "natuurlijke getal" een deelmengde van die "positieve of negatieve of nulle heeltallen"? Niet in die wiskunde aan zichself, maar die algebra, die een aanwending is van die wiskunde (zoals gesang of symphonie van muziek, en door die gelijkzwevende stemming is die aangewandte muziek niet heel correct van perspectiev van die wiskundlijke muziek.)

42 - the Answer

Any reader of HHGG - which is spelled out as Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy - knows that 42 is the answer to "life the universe and everything". Now, funny thing, the Bible agrees. The man who was nailed to a Cross nearly two thousand years before HHGG is set to begin is certainly all that, and he is as certainly 42, more precisely, 42:nd descendant of Abraham (14 from Abraham to King David, 14 from King David to the Babylonian captivity and another 14 from Babylonian captivity to Jesus Christ).

Now, the extra-funny thing is, I am not at all sure Douglas Adams ever knew the Bible agreed, or if he ever cared if he was told. You see, I come from reading the prologue. It seems that Dawkins' book The God Delusion is a kind of plagiarism of Oolan Colluphid whom Douglas Adams seems to have held in some admiration.* It seems that there was a girl who came up with a better idea how to fix things, without having to nail anyone anywhere. But a disaster happened before she could reach the phone booth, so it was never made known.

Never mind that celebrating Holy Mass in a worthy manner is fixing things without nailing Christ to the Cross again, since it makes present the sacrifice he already carried out back on Calvary. No extra nailing required, it's sinning after grace that is extra nailing.

Never mind that the ones who think we should search for other ideas than Christianity have a knack of nailing Christ to the Cross again, in his members.

Recall how I got it pretty wrong using the calculator function on the computer? Well, now I did it on paper, dividing upper and lower parts of each division with a million first:

What I got was, for first difference between two ratios, each of which is an inversed square rule:

16,101,065,993 g/m2 = 16,101,066 kg/m2 = 16,101 tons/m2

... and for second try, the ratio that is an inversed cube rule:

16,502,191,642 g/m2 =16,502,192 kg/m2 = 16,502 tons/m2.

Now, remember, this is not the actual tidal generation force. You must multply that by mass of earth and by gravitational constant.

Guess you see now that gravitational constant must be a very low decimal, so that multiplying by it equals dividing by a very large number.

Because when we are only dealing with this formula, without multiplying by f, we get a pressure upwards and westwards which in combination would far outweigh the one atmosphere pressure downwards which we get at sea level.

Of course, multiplying by mass of earth, which is in kg, would involve multiplying kg by kg. Is there any kind of scientific unit that goes with kg2/m2 rather than with kg/m2? Would gravitational constant have an implied .../kg so as to avoid the kg2? I quite frankly do not know, only that if this works out, the gravitational constant must be very many magnitudes below the proportion "*1".

I also know that the very exact nature of the gravitational constant is one of the things that, on any Newtonian view, makes the Universe function, and is therefore one of the arguments given for an intelligent creator.

Now, I am not sure whether this works out with modern science in general, or not. Some scientist is bound to know.

However, assuming it works, we still have the conundrum how the physics work. Especially neap tide physics with heavenly body in nadir. Lalande's explanation that earth withdraws from waters opposite star (in case of spring tides) implies (at a first glance, which may be corrected) that in neap tides earth withdraws in two different directions at once. Sir George Darwin's explanation of Earth having a centrifugal force equal to the Lunar Gravitational Pull (M/r2) because the common centre of Earth and Moon is within the Earth poses the problem that there is no symmetry with the explanation for Solar Tides, since the common centre of Earth and Sun is - on Newtonian and Heliocentric views - not in the Earth but in the Sun.

And if we assume spiritual and therefore intelligent and voluntary explanations, we may assume that they are able to do something which looks like the math we have been dealing with, without those conundra in the explanation.

The best I can get without directly involving the supernatural would be to say that Lunar and Solar gravity differences towards the heavenly bodies provoke the principal waves as such, but that they are occurring one octave above the source of the oscillation, i e with twice as many wave tops. Mechanism for which is not known. But final purpose of which (assuming there to be minds or a mind behind it) is: not to disrupt Earth by fewer and more profound tidewaves than we actually get.

I looked it up, and if the sudokuable numeral at its start is followed by decimals, you need to "multiply by 10- 11" or more properly speaking divide by 1011. It also includes multiplications and divisions by certain basic units (If anyone wonders, no: I still do not think that decimal fractions are numbers, the gravitational constant, if there is such a thing, is obviously not a number but a proportion, those too are written with numerals)./HGL

The mystery of where the opposing centrifugal force is from has more or less been resolved. If I do not quite understand it, no doubt I am dense. But first I have to admit that on the page "Sir George Darwin corercted Galileo on tides" I gave an explanation which was in fact Lalande's, and was the one I had been given in my physics classes in high school. No doubt our physics teacher thought that Sir George Darwin's explanation was too much above our heads. As I am reading it (pp.63 ff. in J. Rouch's book) I wonder if he was not pretty right about that.

Moon and Earth revolve around a common centre inside Earth (and this explanation is apparently valid for Sun and Earth too, since in both cases Earth has a centrifugal force equal to the attraction of the star at the centre of Earth!) and that revolution of Earth around its centre with the Moon gives rise to a centrifugal force. This is the centrifugal force which is on each side roughly but not exactly equal to the centripetal force exercised on particles (such as water) on either side of Earth, Moonwards or opposite Moon (and never mind that on Moonwards side the attraction of the Moon would be centrifugal as to Earth quite as much as the centrifugal power of Earth itself!) - and for that matter Sunwards and opposite Sun. Which may coincide, may be opposite, may be at straight angles and anything in between. But so far Sir George Darwin as referred to by J. Rouch is only giving the explanation for the Moon.

J. Rouch mentioned that English scientists, as opposed to French ones, do not feel they are degrading science by divulging it to the public. I wonder if he had degraded the renommé of science if he had tried to divulge equally the explanation valid for the Sun.

I wonder if my science teacher did not give me Lalande's explanation because it is back in favour?

So, I could not derive from M/r2 - M/(r+a)2 he other formula 2Ma/3.

I am not bright enough in algebra for that. But I can test their equivalence. As I did for my surprising results which were however correct, though they gave me not the formula I was looking for.

Instead of inserting just any values, I will insert the right ones - that is the right ones according to astronomy. The distances r and a and therefore r+a and r-a are no problem. That has been measured by trigonometry that I admit is correct or, at least, not far off. It is a question of accuracy, not of possible wrong approach. And neither do I offer to make the values more accurate, nor do I see any point in doing so.

The kg values are however problematic for me who do not believe the heliocentric system, therefore not believe that Kepler's laws simply calque cosmographic reality and are simply explainable by Newtonian / Laplacean physics based on the celebrated formula F=GMm/r2. But problematic or not, I go along with it, so I have a value with which to test the accuracy of the algebra in reducing the formulas.

The first formula gives 1610.16 g/m2 or 1.61016 kg/m2.

The second formula gives 1.65001 g/m2! Ouch, what is this? Did the calculator cut off a few zeros from the first number arbitrarily?

Better check it out by hand! Or wait, I might just shorten the zeros by dividing with a million on either side:

OK, this time I get the result far too large instead: 165.001 kg/m2. Whatever!

Probably you can get the maths right even if I cannot. Or if my calculator cannot when I copy above and below values into it, deleting commas for the thousands and replacing the decimal point with a comma. Try it yourself, you are more bright than I. Let's go on.

Actually, I think I will test the equivalence of the formulas on simpler values. M=1,2,3; r=1,2,3; a=1,2,3 but r>a

1, 1, 1; M/r2 - M/(r+a)2 = 1 - 1/4 = 3/4
1, 1, 1; 2Ma/r3 = 2/1 ! Stuck at even first try !

Of course, the author added it works - only? - while a/r is very small, is that the clue, it being an approximation?

Let's make a=1 but M and r each=1000.

1000, 1000, 1; M/r2 - M(r+a)2 = 1000/1000000 - 1000/1002001 =?
1000, 1000, 1; 2Ma/r3 = 2000/1000000000 = 2/1000000

And to resolve first:

1000/1000000 - 1000/1002001
= 1002001000/1002001000000 - 1000000000/1002001000000
= 1002001/1002001000 - 1000000/1002001000 = 2001/1002001000
.... which is close to 2/1000000. But not exactly equal.

I will now stick to the first formula. Tidal force for Moon on object far side of Earth is then 1.6061 kg/m2. Times mass of earth times gravitational constant. Presumably the force on object same side of Earth is pretty equal. And tidal force of Sun is to it as 26/59, that is smaller.

And measuring tidal forces is of course a child's play. Seeing that any port has a tide, all you have to do is measure the tide and the amount of water to measure the tidal force. Right?

Oh, why measure the tidal force at all, we have after all calculated it from the known masses as well as known distances of Sun and Moon to Earth. Why bother to look up reality and see if it corresponds, since the theory is so neat? I mean a child could understand such reasonings as we have been dealing with, couldn't it?

Well, because it is a matter of science. And science means to look it up in reality, remember.

So, you measure the generating forces of the tides by looking at the tides in the ports. A smaller variation occurs every truly local noon hour and midnight hour. A larger variation - sometimes coinciding with the smaller - occurs every time the moon is straight above or straight below the waters. And when that is, obviously is a matter of when in the lunar month we are dealing with. Newmoon and fullmoon there is only one large high tide at noon and one large tide at midnight. That is called spring tide. At half moons - for astronomers known as the quarters - there is a smaller high tide at morning and at evening while the high tides of noon and midnight are somewhat smaller still. That is what is called neap tides.

And in between the high tide will be at nine o'clock morning and evening or at three o'clock after noon and in the morning. With a somewhat lesser peak at noon and at midnight.

This is what we see in every port, right?

Of course, J. Rouch does not actualy say that, but this is what the theory tends to predict right?

What J. Rouch actually says about the portal tides is so funny that I suppose (if we wish to defend this theory of tides that is, either Lalande's or Sir George Darwin's) I must have misunderstood it.

There is the Semidiurnal tide, like in Brest or on either side of the English channel. Fig. 5 on page 38 (for Brest) puts the peaks at 6 and 18 hours and the lowest levels at noon and at midnight. Of course that could be that particular day in the month, but J. Rouch does not mention that fact.

There is the Diurnal tide anywhere in the Mexican Gulf, or for that matter in Copenhagen. The diagram given for Pensacola puts peaks at six o'clock one day and starting six o'clock next day but lasting further on to noon. Lowest points somewhere between 18 and midnight.

There is the Mixed type which gives really funny patterns for San Diego, San Francisco and Honolulu, all of them in the Pacific Ocean. I mean, if the usual explanations about what happen at tides are given in San Francisco, to young people who can then observe the tides, I do not wonder at all if New Age abounds in San Francisco. Seeing that conventional Christianity is not there and now (or for that matter here and now) in the habit of giving spiritual explanations to material phenomena except at a very far distance when God set creation started. Because, what the diagram shows for San Francisco is at least as compatible with Mermaids sensing the passages of Sun and Moon and dancing to it, with some freedom of movement, as it is with gravitation causing it all.

You see, the tides that really correspond to the aboriginal tidal forces to which we have now given the formula as far as I was able to make it through the algebra and the explanations as far as I was able to follow them are the tides on the Ocean. There is where we measure how high or low water is directly due to Sun and Moon. What happens in ports is a resonance phenomenon, something related to the tides over deep Oceans but not identical to them.

And if the resonance for a Moon tide moving around the clock around the lunar month is funny insofar as it is not moving around the clock around the lunar month (unless I got that wrong, that is), it is at least possible.

Think of the formants due to which we have the vowel sounds. They are very clearly defined, whichever be the tone we are singing at. If F1 and F2 are far apart we get an Uh or an Ah as in Cup or Father, for instance. If both are low we get an OO, if both are high we get an EE. And so on. And we can sing any vowel on any tone of the scale, remember.

Something like that may be the case in portal tides. Unless of course I misinterpreted the information in the book of J. Rouch.

But if measuring the portal tides does not confirm heliocentric astronomy with its gravitational explanations very directly, at least measuring the tides in the Oceans will do it, right?

And I suppose that has been done by satellites, right? Or maybe deduced from currents?

Because tide meters are no use at all in the middle of the Ocean. A floater on top of the water needs a thing attached to the bottom to use as a measuring rod. You get that in ports but not in the Mid Atlantic. And a pressure chamber at the bottom needs to send its measurings to someone above water. That is also more feasible in ports than in Mid Pacific outside the Island Belts. Plus the fact that it is easier to measure a difference in water pressure between 6 and 8 metres of depth than between 10.000 metres and 10.010 metres of depth. At least I think it is.

So, the distances Earth-Sun and Earth-Moon are known. If we assume the masses are correct for Earth, Moon and Sun as well, not forgetting gravitational constant, we can explain by F=GMm/r2 the attraction of Sun an Earth and of earth on Moon keeping them in orbit and the primary tidal forces by GMm/(r-a)2 - GMm/r2 on close side and GMm/r2 - GMm/(r+a)2 on far side, but do not know really whether the difference of GMm/r2 stands directly for the heavenly body's attraction on Earth as a whole or whether it stands for a centrifugal force in Earth. Neat enough, but neither side of this neatness can be very accurately independently confirmed as far as I have so far seen.

And that is somewhat less neat for people pretending that it is child's play to prove from tides and from planetary and satellitary orbits that the bodies have such and such masses and from masses that the gravitational explanation is both true and requiring Earth to move around the Sun.

Actually, it is a pretty hard science insofar as it is science at all. In between the theoretical primary tidal forces and actually observed tides, you get at least five variables:

  • Principal semidiurnal lunar wave or M2, 28.98° per hour, 12.42 h. between them
  • Principal semidiurnal solar wave or S2, 30.00° per hour, 12.00 h. between them
  • Elliptic mean lunar semidiurnal wave or N2, 28.44° per hour, 12.66 h. between them
  • Diurnal lunisolar wave or declinational or K1, 15.04° per hour, 23.93 h. between them
  • Diurnal lunar wave or O1, 13.94° per hour, 25.82 h. between them.


And when you have the relative strengths of those for any port, you can calculate the tides with a certain accuracy.

I would have understood this much better if I had been offered a real course on tides when I was asking. All I got was some ten minutes to half an hour about Lalande's explanation. I asked how it applied to neap tides ... I was not satisfied and the teacher had no time to go on. That is what comes of scheduling all pupils to same curriculum, whatever their interests, school becomes unsatisfactory since never making a profound transfer of interesting knowledge.

Now, with issues as complex as these, there is a certain chance or risk or whatever that we are being bamboozled. Just as we very probably must trust the scientists not only on facts they start out with but also on calculations, unless we are good at mathematics, we are supposed to accept that we must similarily trust the scientist on the side of logic.

No, we are quite free to ask whether these tides, hard science as they are in themselves, are not very flimsy as proof of gravitation being the true explanation of both Heliocentrism (which is therewith supposed to be truly explained and truly proven) and of Tides. Because tides as we see them are a good deal removed from the astronomical factors.

But if you do wish to indulge in gravitational explanations, I will give you another video about a theory of Geocentrism where that is taken into account: Robert A. Sungenis builds on a theory of a hollow universe actually working and adds that by divine intervention Earth is in that void in the middle.

The alternative seems to be a cosmology quite unacceptable with the three dimensions of space "wrapped around a fourth one".

To me Sungenis makes at least as much sense, except that he is presupposing gravitational explanations are really and truly proven, where I am doubtful, and he does not mention spiritual explanations although to us as Christians believing in God Creator of the Visible and Invisible things that explanation is fully available and as for stars at least favoured by the book of Baruch.

Remember the previous essays, where the tidal forces are basically the gravitational pull, that is?

Here I get - when I turn to reading up on tides - quite another formula for gravitational tidal forces. My source here is a book, collection being Bibliothèque Scientifique, author being J. Rouch, his qualities being Honorary Director of Musée Océanographique and Member of L'Académie de la Marine. The title is Les Marées, and the publisher is Payot, in Paris. I turn to pages 49 and 50. French in left and my English translation in right column of below table:

Wait a minute!

Are the forces provoking tides gravitation or something else? Supposedly gravitation right!

And we agree between this formula and Newton's above that the gravitational forces are directly proportional to the masses - except that here J. Rouch is leaving out compounding them by the mass of earth, presumably including that in some gravitational constant.

But the inverse proportionality, is it with the square or the cube of the distance?

OK, I calculated a mean distance from taking mean distance of Aphelium and Perihelium of Earth and taking the mean of Apogee and ... for Moon and got a factor of 497.8. Here the factor is only 389 times. Did I count wrong? Did science change? Or are we talking of mean distance of syzygies being a different thing than I calculated, does he start from largest distance of Moon? I do not know.

Note also that J. Rouch is giving the facts in order of explanation. As order of discovery goes (same relation as detective novel to criminal's autobiography, for instance) it would be atrocious to set hugeness or mass of Sun (did he even distinguish volume from mass=volume times density?) before the distance, since it is calculated by the distance, just as those of the Moon are.

Which also gives us the absolute (as believed) and therefore relative masses of Sun and Moon.

Now, it seems tides are not directly caused by gravitation only but indirectly only - by some formula derived from the F=GMm/R2 but not identical to it. So, cube of distance is correct for solar and lunar tidal influences, it would seem. And it is 58.9 million times.

Well, here we get to a sticky part: how do you derive that? Page 59:

If particle P is between hb M and Earth ... why?

If particle P has Earth between itself and hb M ... again why?

Because, "greatness" here obviously mean "greatness and direction", as usually with Newtonic vectors.

Somehow I missed something. I actually missed it when I was a Heliocentric in grades nine and ten discussiing this with a retired Physics teacher who sometimes replaced the younger science teacher.

I was already then suspicious of the case why spring tides at newmoons occur on BOTH sides of the earth according to the diagrams of spring tides and neap tides I had been looking at.

When given explanation that gravity displaces water between Earth and Moon+Sun more than Earth's solids but Earth's total solids more than waters behind it, I though "ok - but what about the neap tide case?" At the halfmoon crescant or the halfmoon decrescant?

Let us see if I can make sense of the following explanation as I slowly translate it from French to English:

Considerons le cas très simple des points C et D de la Terre,Let's consider the very simple case of points C and D on Earth,
sur la ligne qui joint le centre de l'astre perturbateuron the line which joins the centre of the perturbing heavenly body
(la Lune par exemple)(the Moon for instance)

The referral is now to figure 9, on which I see A and B as points on the Poles and C and D as opposite points of the equator. C has the heavenly body in zenith, D in nadir.

Leaving the text aside, since I do not have the book now, I cite content from memory.

Let r be the distance from centre of Earth to centre of Moon. Let M be the mass of the Moon. Let a be distance between centre and surface of Earth. This mass imposes on any particle in place C between itself and centre of Earth a disruption equalling the gravitational pull on point C minus the gravitational pull on Earth (centre of mass), and on any point D beyond the centre of Earth a disruption equalling gravitational pull on Earth (at centre of mass) minus the gravitational pull on point D.

How so? And how come the author instead of gravitational pull used the words "accélération"?

First question: since centre of Earth is further from Moon than point C and closer to Moon than point D, the same centre and all solids directly attached to it (or even semisolidly more attached to it than waters, if we count the theory of magmas floating inside earth) is more affected by gravitation than detachables or floatables on point D but less affacted than floatables on point C or detachables there either. Using the Newtonian formula F=GMm/r2 we get first to acknowledge that:

F(point D) < F < F(point C)

Then we replace with other side of formula, making a the addition or subtraction for radius:

GMm/(r+a)2 < GMm/r2 < GMm/(r-a)2

Since G - gravitational constant and m - mass of Earth - are equal in all, we can bracked them out:

Gm { M/(r+a)2 < M/r2 < M/(r-a)2 }

Or:

M/(r+a)2 < M/r2 < M/(r-a)2

Which implies two possible subtractions:

M/r2 - M/(r+a)2 = disruption for point D.

M/(r-a)2 - M/r2 = disruption for point C.

Now, why does the author use the word "acceleration" rather than "gravitational pull"? In Newtonian physics ... ouch!

I just forgot about the counterforces! It is as great as (Gm)(M/r2) so maybe, just maybe the equations will be equal anyway.

But the question for a philosopher is not just if the mathematics fit, but also if the interpretation on which one bases the mathematics fits the reality. So, I will not just go on with the mathematics, I will try to analyse the meaning of it. The meaning of what I just said, as well as the meaning of the other thing that J. Rouch said. If I can, that is.

What I mean is simply taking accelerations produced by Moon without taking counterforces into account and making subtractions to account for differences.

What he means is that there is at C a counterforce equal to the pull of the Moon ... somewhere? ... which counterforce is equal to Moon's pull on centre of mass of Earth. Why?

Does this difference of my intuitive following of his concepts and the way he expresses them mean I misunderstand his so to speak physical and ontological physics? Or is he merely saying it a different way in order to get an opposite sign on other side in order to get forces of opposite directions because he is calculating vectors rather than just sizes of forces? Is it just a difference of mathematical expression of physics in formulas?

Why is this an important question for the philosopher?

I am not writing this essay to get a physicist carreer instead of a writer's and composer's carreer. I am writing it to understand if possible and if possible make my readers understand whether the physics involved - the ontological part, what you can describe in words that can be intuitively understood - make sense, and if they make sense as well from a Geocentric perspective.

OK. What does Newton say when he claims that every action of a force provokes an equal and opposite counterforce?

I tried to figure it out, here is what I came up with: if Moon pulls Earth, and if Earth does not move towards Moon, this means Earth exercises a counterforce to the Moon, equal in size (M/r2) to that exercised by Moon and opposite in direction. Does this mean Earth is all the time vibrating back and forth? And where would such a force come from? Is Newton not attributing to matter a power of obstinacy which of itself it has not? Is this even a good time to ask the question? And is this the kind of question that physicists deal with when asked by common people, or do they leave such questions out even then?

Whichever formula we chose, and whether they are equivalent or not (I have not yet done the maths, will do) I would like to know:
1°) Is it a counterforce manifested in small tugging back and forth as vibration or is it a difference of displacement in acceleration as seen in absolute space;
2°) can both explanations be used for a Geocentric cosmography (as in serious cosmography, not just mathematical model) and for a Heliocentric / Acentric one;
3°) and is the maths involved the same in both explanations?

Getting back to writing this essay after a few tries at recuperating the algebraic steps that J. Rouch goes through to derive the inverse cube rule for tidal forces from the inverse square rule for gravitational pull in total. Remember, the difference between on the one hand the gravitational pull on solid earth masses, between sea and sea on opposite sides of Earth, which are everywhere equal to a gravitational pull where the masses of Earth and Moon are divided by the square of distance from centre of Moon to centre of Earth, because solids are connected to centre and, on the other hand, the gravitational pull on loose things like water on one or other side, where the masses of Earth and Moon are divided by the square of distance between centre of Moon and that one side of the Earth, that difference rather than the gravitational pull as such, is the tidal force. And similar as to Moon and its tidal forces, so also Sun and its tidal forces.

So, let us take either M/r2 - M/(r+a)2 or M/(r-a)2 - M/r2. I have been stuck with the first of these some time till today continuing, and here is what I came up with.

First of all, we need to get a common denominator. For 1/3 - 1/4, we need to get a denominator which can be translated to .../3 as well as to .../4 and we get it by multiplying these, which have no factor in common: .../12. But such a multiplication must be made on the enumerator side as well. To translate 1/3 into .../12 we multiply both enumerator and denominator by 4, like this: 4/12. And to translate 1/4 into .../12 we multiply by 3, like this: 3/12. So 1/3 - 1/4 = 4/12 - 3/12 = 1/12. Now, apply this to the formula M/r2 - M/(r+a)2!

I get M((r+a)2 - r2)/r2(r+a)2.

Now for any (a+b)2 - a2 we remember the conjugate rule, which states that a2 - b2 = (a+b)(a-b). Obviously this is no way near giving the same geometry of the one side and the other side of the equation, but it is giving the same sum in arithmetic by diverging paths. When we apply algebra to natural phenomena one or other way of describing the mathematics may be a good way to describe the things, but it might be the other way that makes calculation simpler.

In the conjugate rule, insert (r+a)2 for a2 and r2 for b2. When we simplify the two sides we get a very funny-looking and even seemingly paradoxical formula:

(r+a)2 - r2

=(r+a+r)(r+a-r)

= 2ra + a2.

I doubted the result very much, as I found it paradoxical that r gets squared on one side but not other, but I made a table of rs and as with whole number values. For one on either variable, both formulas give three. For 2 and 1 they give 5. For two and two they give 12. Try 3 and 1, 3 and 2, 3 and 3, 4 and 1, 4 and 2, 4 and 3 and 4 and 4 yourself. Whatever values you put into the formulas, wherever r is equal to or greater than a, it remains true that:

(r+a)2 - r2 = = 2ra + a2

So, I can now simplify

M((r+a)2 - r2)/r2(r+a)2

into

M(2ra + a2)/r2(r+a)2.

But I still cannot get to the inverse cube rule we are looking for.

Now, since I am not seriously doubting that J. Rouch got the algebra right insofar as algebra is ever right (i e in equivalent numbers or sizes or other values), I will simply give what J. Rouch offered as an explanation and hope people better in algebra than I can make some sense of it:

M/(r-a)2 - M/r2

= M/r2[1/(1 - a/r)2 - 1]

=2Ma/r3 (with a/r being very small)

And remember how we excluded mass of earth and gravitational constant from the calculation, here he brings them back again in one quantity he calls f.

On either side of Earth, on equator close to and far from Moon, we have now a perturbing force, a difference of gravitational pull, equal to:

(2Ma/r3)f

But to get it on other side, instead of starting from

M/(r-a)2 - M/r2

we start from

M/r2 - M/(r+a)2

which means we get the perturbing force in opposite direction, it would seem!

Now, what does this mean physically? I mean in descriptions with verbs like pull and push and so, rather than in physicists' algebra?

One could say: the Moon makes the water on Moon side rush up from the Earth a little faster than it makes the Earth rush up from the waters on the side opposite the Moon. A Heliocentric would add: for as long as Earth is in that rotational position, until it is another angle of Earth and water that is aligned straight line with Moon. A Geocentric believing this explanation (such as Sungenis unless he takes my other interpretation of the formula) would say until Moon rotates around Earth and makes this happen to another angle of Earth and water aligned with itself. Meanwhile, in either explanation, the parts where this happened an hour earlier or so are dealing with a similar formula but a smaller a and therefore a smaller tidal force. When they reach or Moon reaches a position where they are not aligned with the Moon but stand side by side with centre of Earth with same distance to Moon as it, then we reach the lowest point of the tidal forces.

That was one interpretation. Now let us get to the actual words of J. Rouch.

"Let r be the distance of centre of Earth from centre of Moon. The attraction of Moon on centre of Earth is, in virtue of the law of universal gravitation [F=GMm/r2], proportional to M/r2, M being the mass of the Moon. The distance r is in the mean constant. [He would have been wiser to say that it is in any given moment equal to itself, since that is very much more relevant]. The attraction of Moon on Earth, since the distance r remains constant, must be counterbalanced by a centrifugal force directed in opposite direction of attraction and equal to M/r2."

The obvious problem is: where does J. Rouch get this centrifugal force from? It may be a postulate to have it, in order to make distance of Earth and Moon remain constant, but in astronomy that is taken care of by the speed of the Moon rotating around Earth. Not by any force on Earth directed opposite way. In Sungenis' system, there would be a pull, and the gravitational forces of the Universe (all stars taken together rotating daily around the Earth) would pull the Earth immediately back into position in absolute centre. Such a pull and pull back would make Earth vibrate with a vibration strongest on a line through the Earth, aligning centre of Earth with centre of Moon and second strongest on a line aligning centre of Earth with centre of Sun, except at newmoon and fullmoon when these two lines coincide.

So, for water on point C, it is pulled upwards by the Moon and shaken back down by Earth pulling back with a slightly less force. For water on point D, it is pushed upwards by the Earth's backpull from the Moon and pulled down by Moon's slightly less great pull. And for either, the pushing or pulling up is slightly greater than the pulling or shaking down.

Note here, that though the Mathematics is quite equivalent on either side of the Earth on points aligned with centres of Earth and Moon, the physical causality is not the same, but in fact inversed.

From Newton I had the formula F[orce]=G[ravitational constant]*M[ass of greater body]*m[ass of lesser body] / R[adius]2 or F=G*M*m / R2 - via the video I consulted. Then I made some calculations in the comments.

For medium distances of Sun and Moon from earth I consulted wikipedia. Then I found Sun was 497.8 times as far away as Moon. I counted wrong, but I have so far not seen any correction in my email.*

I found that the masses should relate as Sun being 247,804.84 times as massive as the Moon.

And when I looked up the masses on wikipedia, I found the sun was > 2.700.000 times as massive as the Moon. Meaning that according to that formula the Sun ought to have a ten times stronger influence of gravitation on the Earth.

But when I let the calculator check, I get 27,073,635.49748197 times. If this is right, one paradox of Modern World viex disappears and it is so far vindicated. Note that Sungenis would imply that the math is exactly the same for the Geocentric system he presents.

Was I hypnotised to get it wrong (without knowing it?) or just cursed?

Seven quick takes


Grammar:

I made a typo, like Sven instead of Seven.

Rhetoric:

Sometimes what I say comes out as rhetoric for something else - even if I am not saying that other thing. I am Catholic, I am also loosely Maurassian style Monarchist-to-Fascist. Yesterday I posted a page about my difficulties with LIVING my faith and some Magician (or some priest excommunicating me or otherwise despising me) made sure I had an opportunity to write about the Ersatz creed to which Charles Maurras subscribed: Positivism.*

Dialectic:

Wishing people would be more logical and take my words more as what they logically mean instead of as hints at something else.

Arithmetic:

Romans had Multiplication tables as V by V. All there was needed. Same as for addition tables. Zeros are not needed for correct maths, but they have a certain function in speeding calculations up a bit.

Geometry:

I am not a comics or manga illustrator, for the obvious reason that I cannot draw.

Music:

I am not a musician performing my own compositions, because I cannot play an instrument. I think however if I possessed a guitar or recorder in a few months I would be up to level for one or two of the simpler ones on my musicalia blog.**

Astronomy:

I just asked if Stellar Aberration had been observed from Mars. That might have proved, if not the "Heliocentric theory", at least the alternative between "Heliocentrism" as now seen and Tychonian astronomy as updated to include fixed stars in what orbits the sun. So might Stellar Parallax as observed from Mars, but that observation has as far as official sources are concerned NOT been made. As to my recent question, I have not yet received an answer. Kant a Tort


Je suis trop fatigué pour m'initier à sa Critique de la Raison Pure. Mais ceci est déjà un mal, qu'il ne comprend pas bien les limites entre ce qu'il appelle analytique ou nécessairement vrai et ce qu'il appelle synthétique et empiriquement vrai.

Selon lui 7+5=12 ne serait pas analytique. On pourrait par analyse comprendre que ce sera un autre nombre, mais pas lequel.

Faux.

- Sept plus un font huit (analytique, définition de huit)
- Huit plus un font neuf (analytique, définition de neuf)
- Neuf plus un font dix (analytique, définition de dix)
- Dix plus un font onze (analytique, définition d'onze)
- Onze plus un font douze (analytique, définition de douze)

- Plus cinq fait plus quatre plus un (analytique, définition de plus cinq)
- Sept plus cinq fait donc sept plus un plus quatre, ce qui fait huit plus quatre (résultante de deux analytiques)
- Plus quatre fait plus trois plus un (analytique, définition de plus quatre)
- Huit plus quatre fait donc huit plus trois plus un ce qui fait neuf plus trois (résultante de deux analytiques)
- Plus trois fait plus deux plus un (analytique, définition de plus trois)
- Neuf plus quatre fait donc dix plus deux (résultante de deux analytiques)
- Ce qui fait dix plus un plus un (analyse de plus deux)
- Ce qui fait onze plus un (analyse de onze) ce qui fait douze (analyse de douze).

Alors, que 7+5=12 est bel et bien analytique, nécessaire, et non juste synthétique, empirique.

C'est bien de comprendre une distinction qui est nécessaire pour le raisonnement correcte, mais c'est encore mieux de le pouvoir aussi appliquer correctement.

On verra si je résume la lecture de Kant pour débusquer sa prochaine gaffe ou non, entre temps, au revoir:

La Science et le débat public

Actes Sud: La Science et le débat public a été critiqué en Libération.

Et le philosophe [Jacques BOUVERESSE] de souligner que le "scepticisme" produit par la science ne doit pas conduire vers des croyances anciennes, mais l'apprentissage de l'acceptation de "ne pas savoir".


Et pourquoi ne devrait il pas conduire vers des croyances anciennes, surtout celles qui nous épargneraient une surdose du scepticisme?

Que 2+2=4 et que la somme des angles d'un triangle égale une droite, autrement le double de l'angle droit. Que les petits naissent de même nature que leurs parents. Que la chaleur et le repos dans la chaleur et l'ail et le thym aident contre le rhume. Voilà des croyances assez vieilles. Que, pour vieilles qu'elles soient, personne ne met en doute et personne ne devrait les mettre en doute non plus.

Que la couleur et le son sont des qualités. Que les variations des petits par rapport à leurs parents est dans certaines limites qu'elle ne dépasse pas. Que la terre est tout aussi ferme est immobile qu'elle nous parait. Que la légèreté est une qualité positive, et non juste l'absence de pésanteur. Que la raison est de nature spirituelle et non juste un arrangement des mouvements dans le cerveau. Voilà des croyances qu'on prétend vieillis.

Mais, si c'était précisemment les croyances prétendument vieillis qui étaient les vraies? Si les impasses de la recherche ne nous signalent pas un savoir se contenter de ne pas savoir tellement qu'une possibilité de certitude que nous savions?

Merci de nous signaler qu'il y a un programme pour interdire cette conclusion!
