Jean Madiran et Kent Hovind

Triviū, Quadriviū, 7 cætera : Jean Madiran et Kent Hovind
http://triv7quadriv.blogspot.com/2013/08/jean-madiran-et-kent-hovind.html

http://correspondentia-ioannis-georgii.blogspot.com/2013/08/quelques-importants-present.html

My father moved to the South of France with his second family and I hated having to be away at school. I missed My Grandfather very much. My father has always been in charge of My Grandfather's literary estate, and about four years ago he started to think about who would succeed him on the board of the company which administers the Tolkien estate. He named new directors to join him and I was not one of them.

That Quote Was Not So Hyperdox ... Herman

"Says all homosexuals are damned. Has an icon of Seraphim Rose."

But using a category like "homosexual" - which is about "sexual orientation" - which is about "taste in temptations against chastity" (excepting married men whose sexual orientation is their wife and married women whose sexual orientation is their husband) - and having it stand for a particular sin against both chastity and nature (when Eugene Rose, still in the world, before his conversion, was fooling around with both sexes, was he at least making babies when the sins against chastity were with women or not, I do not know), is so modernist. And making that sin the one that cannot be forgiven even if one repents of it, is so Calvinist.

Frankly, it is one of the things where a little Latin philosophy might help someone out once in a while. Not tearing things apart that absolutely belong together, but refusing to confuse things that are not the same.

Back when I was was Roumanians for two years - and was treated as if I were Hyperdox Herman in person - I wondered if the Penance of Oscar Wilde, late though it came, had merited by intercession the penances of Eugene Seraphim Rose and - unsuccessful as they long were - of the man whom I had a bit earlier called Papa Gregorio XVII de Palmar de Troya.*

I also misremembered a word of Christ - or mingled two of them: the one where Sodom and Gomorrah shall have a better deal on the Day of Judgement than two cities and the one where Prostitutes and Taxcollectors shall enter Heaven before the Jews. I actually thought that the Gay Culture had to start converting before Jews could.

In case anyone wonders, I have not been in love with men, but one of the girls I had crush on was as Lesbian. Is no longer, though her boyfriend is not me. ANOTHER of the girls I had a crush on (back in my Palmarian days) was a Serbian. Wonder if that is why I became Orthodox for a while. If one calls that being Orthodox. Papists do not, since I was not Papist. Photians do not, since I was very Athanasianly filioquist. I used jokingly to call Roman Catholicism as known over centuries "Spanish Orthodox Church" and FSSPX "Swiss Orthodox Church, Patriarchate of Écône".

Anyway, whether Herman wants to be a priest or monk when he has his catechumenate done, or wants to stay a layman, I think his priest might be treating him unfairly by saying he has catechumenitis, sorry, convertitis. If he is seriously worried about whether to be Serbian or Greek or Russian (I was not at first, since I had a stepfather baptised by a Roumanian Uniate, and then I was because I felt myself targeted to convert to either more Photian or more Malthusian positions than I could in good conscience), he might have a problem and "Latin" as in "non-phyletistic Orthodox" alias RC might be the solution, whether he becomes convinced of Papal Supremacy or not. If it comes to spelling with daseia instead of h, I would not like to see that as a statement, I would like to see if 'e can keep that up wiðout looking as if 'e wrote Cockney, ðis 'Yperdox 'Erman - or better still: I'd like if he wrote cockney and spoke it. Greeks no longer pronounce ðe daseia eiðer, so speaking about 'edge'ogs would not be bad. In that line.

My linguistic tip, whether you call that convertitis, hyperdoxy or simply reactionary conservatism: if you learn Russian, use fita and izhitsa for the Greek loans that need them and DO use the yatch and not the ye in contexts like masculine and neuter locative singular or in the stem of Dyeva=Virgin. And do insist that properly speaking a Dyevushka (which is one of the diminutive forms of Dyeva) is between ages 12 and 30. Just like St Mary the Gyshian** had her chance of converting by marriage (not taken, whether the fault was hers or the clients') between her apostasy to a bad life at age 12 and her conversion to anorectic and anachoretic life which was at age 29. God did not want her to fall before she could properly have married and he did not take away her chances of marriage before it was one year before "too late anyway".

It is basically what I do for a language I know much better than Russian: Swedish. In English (except American spelling reform) or even French and German it is less needed, these three basically have their current spelling from the time of Dr Johnson or a little later. But Swedish and Russian went through "language surgery" of a very unnecessary kind (1870's/1906/1950 vs Russian Revolution) very recently, meaning that the older spelling was also used pretty recently, by people speaking a basically identical language, and can therefore be restored. At Constance - yes, I know Hyperdox Herman does not count this as a Council, but this concerns an episode - the Emperor used the form "schismae" and grammarians promptly corrected him that "schisma" being a Greek neuter noun needed a Genetive and Dative that went like "schismatis/schismati". He argued that he was above the Grammarians. They replied he was not above the Grammar. As Emperor Claudius (I) had found out when he had wanted to introduce a half M to denote the nasal vowel in "sum" instead of the m, and a vowel for schwa or ü instead of the i/u in "optimus/optumus". If they were right, that means that the language reforms touching Swedish and Russian were ultra vires of those governments. Not meaning that imposing per compulsion the older spelling would be intra vires, but using it voluntarily is a protest against that proceeding.

But when it comes to concepts that sound modern - like "homosexual" - and maybe are modern, one tip is to avoid them till you find out what they mean, or ask "what is the guy trying to say and how would a real philosopher like Aquinas have stated it"? I had to make such a reflection yesterday since Disney in a war film was misusing as "opposite of reason" the word "emotion" (which includes things quite as much "with reason" like "just indignation" as it includes things "without reason" or "contrary to right reason" like itching for sins against not only chastity but even nature). A blooper Disney could make as a XXth C. man but which a man like St Thomas Aquinas was not likely to make in the XIIIth C.

*He seems to have been the sole sexual predator in Palmar, and his victims were not children or teens as far as I know but monks and nuns acting under what they considered religious obedience. Wonder if the Palmarians today have something particualr to say about "indiscrete obedience" like obedience when one is sometimes not obliged to obey and sometimes even obliged not to obey a superior? Anyway he died in 2003 and his immediate successor Pedro II in 2011. Now they are at Gregorio XVIII.

**In Paris St Mary of Egypt was called l'Égyptienne but later La Jussienne. I wanted to English that as Gypsian but ... I am not sure how much or little she is honoured by Catholic or Orthodox gypsies by the way. Gyshian is a bit closer.

My Differences with Modern Catholicism

Catholic Answers is a forum based in the diocese of San Diego in which we get answers from among others Fr Vincent Serpa OP and the beautiful Michelle Arnold.

First off, I must say that I am an Apologist and not a Theologian:

Quick Question: What is the difference between an apologist and a theologian?
(answered by Michelle Arnold)
http://www.catholic.com/quickquestions/what-is-the-difference-between-an-apologist-and-a-theologian

She quite correctly compares it to the difference between a scientist (for theologian) and a science teacher (for apologist). I would have preferred science journalist to science teacher, since Chesterton was a journalist, but that is as it may be.

I must also add that my theological knowledge is such that I sometimes get into apologetics against people on Catholic Answers. For instance here, a question answered by Michelle Arnold too:

What vocation may a homosexual pursue?
http://www.catholic.com/quickquestions/what-vocation-may-a-homosexual-pursue

She answers that if marriage and priesthood are out of the question, there are other vocations such as tertiary of some order. My answer would begin with asking why marriage should be out of the question at all. A homosexual is not someone incapable of physically enjoying sexual intercourse with someone of the opposite sex, for if someone were really capable of sodomy or lesbian things but not of coitus of a normal kind, that would be due to demons rather than to his or her natural predisposition. No, it is someone who persistently falls in love with people of his own sex. Now falling in love with someone does not necessarily involve marrying that someone, but even marrying someone does not necessarily mean falling in love with that person. So, a homosexual man could very well marry a woman whom he never fell in love with first. In fact I know of one who did and who has three daughters. A Mormon featured recently on Life Site News. A Mormon who kept falling in love with boys when he was younger (hence homosexual), but who nevertheless due to his belief felt that sodomy was out of the question.

When last debating on Catholic Answers Forum, I opened a thread, exactly on this theme and it was deleted. It was after I copied it to my blog Assorted Retorts that I found the article on Life Site News and put a link to it in the comment section. To anyone speculating on whether I got into debating this question due to being homosexual myself, I recommend some other words of mine on the same comment:

"Invalid thread": Is marriage of two people, one or both of whom is homosexual, but of opposite sex possible?
http://assortedretorts.blogspot.fr/2012/05/invalid-thread-is-marriage-of-two.html

All the heterodoxy of Modern Catholicism, even heresy, is in the assumption that marriage is impossible. That has nothing to do with regarding "gay marriage" as possible, except at inverse ratio: since I do not think ordinary marriage is out of the question for homosexuals, though it may be more difficult for them to achieve, neither do I think gay marriage would make them more equal to other citizens, in matrimonial questions, and that is one major point less in favour of gay marriage, not that I think it would have been a sufficient reason if it were true.

Saying as a theologian or as a priest that such and such must not marry (at all, "not even" a real marriage with someone of the opposite sex) because he is homosexual IS an unjust discrimination against homosexuals, and one which also backfires against people who are unjustly stamped as homosexuals. Which happens now and then to have been - obviously to me - my situation.

The situation in which a wife is abandoned by a husband who finds out that he is homosexual has little to do with this. There was an example on the thread before it was deleted. He obviously thought of himself as heterosexual when marrying that lady. All possibility to avoid that kind of tragedy lies in better crystal balls or horoscopes for finding out what presumed and self-presumed heterosexuals are really homosexuals. In other words it cannot be avoided and it is only superstition such as psychology that promises to do so.

And this brings us to Fulton Sheen. He was a friend of the founders of AA, he endorsed AA. He also endorsed specifically Gaudium et Spes:

Did Fulton Sheen support Vatican II
http://www.catholic.com/quickquestions/did-fulton-sheen-support-vatican-ii

I withdrew my FB like from the Fulton Sheen page when finding out he endorsed AA. It is demanding something like the twelve steps of - monastic - humility of laymen, not due to a monastic vocation, but due to personal disaster. It is also, according to its twelfth step reversing the humility of "self-knowledge" (of a denigrating kind) into the arrogance of presuming to know someone else is an alcoholic. A bit like the arrogance of psychologists presuming to know someone else is homosexual.

Contra Consolmagno - as Cited by the Scotsman

Quote I:

BELIEVING that God created the universe in six days is a form of superstitious paganism, the Vatican astronomer Guy Consolmagno claimed yesterday.

Brother Consolmagno, who works in a Vatican observatory in Arizona and as curator of the Vatican meteorite collection in Italy, said a "destructive myth" had developed in modern society that religion and science were competing ideologies.

He described creationism, whose supporters want it taught in schools alongside evolution, as a "kind of paganism" because it harked back to the days of "nature gods" who were responsible for natural events.*

Refuted in full, and in Latin, on this other blog: Questiuncula de Veritatibus in Paganismo.

Summary: a truth taught by Christians during past centuries, even if no dogma, does not become an error because it is shared by Paganism. Pagan error is not a question of how much one agrees with a certain pagan religion, but of how much one disagrees with Christianity. Harking back to evil that Christians had to repudiate to become Christians is illicit, harking back to something Christians did NOT repudiate but Western Christian Sciety forgot centuries after its Christian conversion is most certainly not.

Quote II:

Brother Consolmagno, who was due to give a speech at the Glasgow Science Centre last night, entitled "Why the Pope has an Astronomer", said the idea of papal infallibility had been a "PR disaster". What it actually meant was that, on matters of faith, followers should accept "somebody has got to be the boss, the final authority".

"It's not like he has a magic power, that God whispers the truth in his ear," he said.*

Not at all. In a matter of faith, where a thing is not decided, there is no need for someone to be a boss in order to decide it. Faith limits are limited to what Christ revealed and the Holy Ghost reminded the Apostles including St Paul, but mainly the eyewitnesses, up to when the last of the Apostles left earthly life.

If Trinity had not been revealed - and I mean strictly revealed - by then, there would have been no need for Popes to stand up for Trinity against Arianism. If abortion had not already been considered by then a most ghastly kind of murder, there would be no need for Popes more recently to stand up against abortion.

There is no need to decide things, just because someone has to be the boss. The faith is not an instruction on how to run a factory. One detail in such an instruction is not decided, the factory may be standing still. And obviously someone or someones has or have to be the boss deciding it. But in matters of faith that is very much not so. Are angels pure spirits or are they a kind of souls inhabiting bodies of more subtle matter? Not revealed, not decided, as far as I know. And may never get to be decided.

Even if they are pure spirits, they certainly can "assumere corpus" - take bodily form. As for instance St Raphaël did when he walked with the younger Tobias. Even if they are pure spirits, the evil ones are able to work impregnations - though that then is effected through spiritual rape of two sinful people in solitary lust, not just one, which is what St Thomas Aquinas thought about cases like Merlin or Hercules. The other school would not agree the demon had to be a succuba before becoming an incubus in order to make children, he would be using and debasing his own body. Avoiding solitary lust is anyway obliging on Christians, even if such events are not among the likelier. So, in practise there is no need for anyone to decide whether angelic beings are perfectly pure spirits or not.

Same thing applies if beings claiming to come from outer space, from more advanced civilisations, come here and claim to be saving our world, if only the Pope or the US President or whoever will listen to their instructions. Angelic beings are able to take bodily form. God gave the Church all instructions it ever needed to save the world two thousand years ago. When those instructions are only little used, the world will die. Society will die morally, emotionally and spiritually, it will approach the state that the world before the Flood had reached just before the Flood, in the days of Noah.

What need there is of one man deciding comes when there is a serious quarrel between two factions about what belongs to the faith and not. In such cases, if Roman Catholicism is the true remnant of the original Church on that point, it is for the Pope to make a final decision. Orthodox say no single bishop can do that, and that it must be a Council. Either way, a final decision from the Church cannot be a ghastly mistake that ruins souls or even misleads intellect ever so slightly: because the CHURCH is the pillar and foundation of TRUTH.

God acting himself as "a nature god" i e directing immediately what happens in created physical nature is not condemned and cannot be condemned by the Church. Angels created by God acting as nature gods in that sense is not condemned and cannot be condemned by the Church.

The third chapter of Baruch (cited in article four of my questiuncula, relevant verses are 34, 35) was part of revelation even before Christianity. And it attributes a will to shine and praise God to the stars. Either that means stars are people like Ramandu in a certain fiction we have most of us enjoyed. Or it means at least that angelic beings are guiding orbit and light emission of any stellar object, but most especially those we traditionally call fixed stars.

Newton's Principia Mathematica, Einstein's Theory of General and of Special Relativity, Friedrich Engels' history of human civilisation in which belief in nature gods is stamped as "primitive" are none of them part of God's Revelation to Mankind, through Christ and through His Church.

Since these words were spoken by Guy Consolmagno a few years ago, more than six in fact, I can hope he has had time to reconsider his positions.

When a Thought Ceases to be Believable to You, You should Cease to Think It.

And whatever you do believe, you should also be able to think.

Eckhart Tolle - really Ulrich Tolle, admirer or of Meister Eckhart and honouring him having changed his name to Eckhart Tolle - was brought to my attention yesterday. I just looked him up. So very not my cup of tea. And so understandable why some nincompoops think he is, and so irritating to understand that. Because, they will probably try again, same message other package, as long as they think that message is appropriate enough for me.

Meanwhile I could be making money of my writings if A) someone else made money from my writings (I have given the necessary authorisations) and B) that someone else sends me part of the money he makes to my account. He does not need a contract making him exclusively authorised to use the one or other essay or group of essays or blog or group of blogs, because giving him that contract, I would not authorise him any more than I have already done, only disauthorise all the others I have authorised. And thereby break my word. He does not need a contract saying how many percent he owes me, I have already said anything he wants to send in return. Even nothing at all if he is poor, ideally at first, since he could get richer and able to send me some later, and since he would be making publicity for my writings and thereby helping other printers, more able than he to send me money for my writings in their print, to find out what I am doing.

But that is not what certain people want me to enjoy, they want me to be confronted with Eckhart Tolle and Veijo Impola, and other Avatars, not of Vishnu, but of Avatarism and non-Christian spirituality.

OK, Tolle says he admires Meister Eckhart, and I know too little of Meister Eckhart to know if he is Christian or not. But Tolle does admire Teilhard de Chardin:

Spirituality is not religion. You can be spiritual and not have a religious context. The opposite is true too: You can be very religious with no spiritual dimension, just doctrine.

Spirituality isn't something I believe in. It is what and who I am: a spiritual being having a human experience, as the French philosopher and priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin profoundly said.

C. S. Lewis once remarked, and Tolle's remark makes it appropriate to recall, that spiritual does not equal good, being full because you have eaten (but not too full and expecting to digest it properly with drinks, including wine or coffee, and with sufficient sleep) is a bodily good and spiritual sins like pride are worse than corporeal ones like overeating. He also remarked that it is not mysticism that validates a doctrine or any and all of them equally, it is sound doctrine that validates a mysticism as not being diabolical.

Now, funny thing is, Veijo Impola thought he had refuted me and Mikael Rosén and a few other Catholic Traditionalists of Sweden by what he had to say, but he rather refutes people like Tolle.

He claims in a letter he sent us, that seven years ago, he had experiences of demons and angels corresponding to our experiences. He has now full, provable knowledge these experiences were psychotic. So, he claims, we should abandon our experiences and therefore also our doctrine of angels and demons, since our experiences are psychotic too.

He refutes Tolle, insofar as he points out that an experience one believes but is not able to think may be a kind of madness.

And Tolle refutes his claim on our attention insofar as Tolle mentions the fact we may have much more doctrine than spiritual experience with angels and demons. Actually I have neither seen any angel nor any demon so far ever in my life. I believe a doctrine about them, I believe it is validated by some who have had experiences explicitly featuring such beings as taking visible shape (see Book of Tobit), but also of everyday experience.

Some coincidences are so funny that I must either believe they come from the demon or from some conspiracy.

Very funny in such a case to be around a "psychiatric" science claiming both belief in spirits and belief in conspiracies to be symptoms of madness. Extremely funny. Or not.

I also believe that a baby was saved by the action of a few angels: one café owner could not roll in his canvas one friday or saturday evening, same weekend a baby falls from very high onto that canvas, bounces, and is saved by a rugby player passing by.

Not sure anymore if the player was a rugby player or other sportsman (ok, nearly sure it was precisely a rugby player), but it was in Paris and it was in the papers. In order to believe in angels you need not see one, you need only count the number of angels involved in the saving of that baby: one preventing the café owner from succeeding, another prompting him not to stay too long trying, a third prompting the stroll of the rugby player, and the guardian angel of the baby prompting the fall to happen the right moment for baby to be saved and for parents to get, for free except a little scare, a lesson about how to screen off the balcony properly.

And we can begin to count the holies connected to Paris: rue de Bac, St Vincent of Paul (body preserved from decomposition), St Genevieve (body preserved till French revolution, ashes thrown into La Seine), St Clotildis, and a few more.

A week or two earlier or later, a baby was killed in Versailles. A demon showed itself, six persons or so fled through the window instead of using holy water or rosaries. And one baby there was killed falling out of that window. The demon did not kill it directly, but by showing itself and inspiring fright - and fright of a kind that sound Catholics in a state of grace, using the Rosary and Holy Water would never have been too apt to fall into.

There too you can start counting the demons: who kept that father off going to Mass, who kept those youngster ignorant of the existence of demons and of how to confront them, but you will be able to find some of the demons in the politics of this poor country, leading to a corps of teachers that do not transmit faith because they do not have it, because one who has it does not become part of that corps but takes a job at a Catholic school or not at all in teaching.

But when I say you can count the angels or demons apparently involved, I do not mean I saw any of them, nor anyone else did except they who saw the demon who frightened the poor family out of the window. I do not mean atheists will admit angels or demons were involved either. But I do mean that the position of atheists becomes pretty weak in face of cases like these.

Making a Catholic believer like me a parallel of Veijo Impola seven years ago does not strengthen their case. Especially not if they started out by seeking him up as a kind of parallel to me.

Nor am I the least convinced he was not actually seing angels and demons (or demons only, some of which disguised as angels) back seven years ago. His conclusion that experience was psychotic may be a second victory of the demons, through the shrinks. I could say through the atheist shrinks, but in Sweden shrinks are often atheists, eastern mystics or modernist "Christians" who deplore fundamentalism.

Any Christian answering to the title of Psychiatries Doctor (or Medicinae Doctor, Specialitatis Psychiatries) who did something good to some victim of sectarian-esoteric or simply brutal abuse (if any) ... that is not what gives psychiatry the kind of power it has over destinies over here.

How could they convince Veijo Impola if they were wrong? Well, psychiatry does dispose of a few brainwashing techniques. Among others to deny the definiteness of the "patient's" positions, expose the same to both sleep deprivations and badgering, letting same understand it won't cease till positions are reconsidered.

There are two ways of depriving someone of sleep. If one is homeless, one can spread a rumour he is dangerous and thereby make people less likely to let him sleep in calm. If one is in hospital, one can allow someone to sleep up to ten hours per day and still deprive him of sleep, by giving drugs that make him need fourteen hours of sleep. Either place, he can be deprived of coffee and cigarettes (in the homeless case by spreading rumours, once again).

But they might have had some help of the fact - if it was one - that he had no basis in Catholic doctrine.

Tant mieux.

Answering a site that ridicules Church Fathers on Geocentrism

I found a pretty impressive passage - on first look* - against consensus of Church Fathers being actually infallible also in matters of science. On first look, as an unbroken tirade, like here - we shall get back to each item afterwards:

Here are some of the many examples in which the Fathers are wrong on details, even from a modern geocentrist perspective. Again, these should all count against establishing any sort of patristic consensus given the standards deployed elsewhere.

Augustine: "And yet, when it pleased Him who with sovereignty and supreme power regulates all He has created, a star conspicuous among the rest by its size and splendor changed its color, size, form, and, most wonderful of all, the order and law of its course!" (City of God, Book XXI, Ch 8) But the sun is NOT conspicuous for its size and splendor. There are billions of stars as big or bigger than it.

Clement of Rome: "The sun and moon, with the companies of the stars, roll on in harmony according to His command, within their prescribed limits, and without any deviation." (First Epistle to the Corinthians, Ch XX). Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the moon's path DOES change and the distance to the earth DOES change. Do geocentrists deny this?

Gregory Nanzianzus: "The sun is extolled by David for its beauty, its greatness, its swift course, and its power, splendid as a bridegroom, majestic as a giant; while, from the extent of its circuit, it has such power that it equally sheds its light from one end of heaven to the other, and the heat thereof is in no wise lessened by distance. (Funeral Orations for St. Basil, 66). Try saying that while on Mercury vs. Pluto.

Gregory of Nyssa: "And how does earth below form the foundation of the whole, and what is it that keeps it firmly in its place? what is it that controls its downward tendency?" (Answer to Eunomius’ Second Book) There is nothing pulling the earth "down".

Gregory of Nyssa: "And when you look at the waning and waxing moon you are taught other truths by the visible figure of that heavenly body, viz. that it is in itself devoid of light, and that it revolves in the circle nearest to the earth" (On the Soul and Resurrection). Not a "circle", sorry. Geocentrists have for centuries had to admit that the orbits are ellipses.

Hippolytus: “But that the circle of the sun is twenty-seven times larger than the moon, and that the sun is situated in the highest (quarter of the firmament); whereas the orbs of the fixed stars in the lowest.” (Refutation of All Heresies, Bk V, Ch 22) Wrong twice.

Archelaus: “Then, again, the living Spirit created the luminaries, which are fragments of the soul" (Disputation with Manes, 22) The stars are "fragments of the soul"? Well, no, sorry.....St. Jerome thought the idea was idiotic.

Gregory of Nyssa: "when the body of heaven compassed all things round, and those bodies which are heavy and of downward tendency, the earth and the water, holding each other in, took the middle place of the universe" (On the Making of Man, 30, 1, 1) The earth is in the center of the universe because it's the heaviest? Well, no. And also, this is a purely pseudo-scientific reason for saying the earth is in the center rather than suggesting it was from Tradition. Sorry there, too

Basil: “the celestial bodies move in a circular course” (Nine Homilies of the Haxameron, Homily I ) No, they do not "move in a circular course". Again, they are ellipses. Geocentrists agree with that, do they not?

St. Cyril of Jerusalem states that the “firmament” is literally comprised of water. But modern geocentrists don’t believe that.

There are many more examples that could be cited, but I think this is sufficient to demonstrate the problem. According to a certain apologist's standards, if these witnesses can't get the details right then they simply cannot be said to form a unanimous witness.

There is one, exactly one point on which they are unanimous: geostasis or geocentrism. There is another question if any of them is wrong from the perspective of a modern geocentric:

Augustine: "And yet, when it pleased Him who with sovereignty and supreme power regulates all He has created, a star conspicuous among the rest by its size and splendor changed its color, size, form, and, most wonderful of all, the order and law of its course!" (City of God, Book XXI, Ch 8) But the sun is NOT conspicuous for its size and splendor. There are billions of stars as big or bigger than it.

Only if trigonometrics from parallax supposition could stand without heliocentric or geokinetic supposition. If alpha Centuari is "four light years" away, because that is parallax measure, then a very bright star showing no parallax at all might well be thought of as very far and therefore, if still seen as bright, very big, very bright, brighter than the sun. But if the fixed stars are about 1 light month away, if the parallax is false perspective created by angels dancing with the stars to God's glory, nothing says Sirius need be a bit bigger or brighter than the sun.

A distance to earth that changes with an ellipse if the ellipse is fixed, does nowise contradict this. Regular variation is not deviation.

Pluto.

It is not the distance that lessens heat, but the dispersion. Or one may say that St Gregory was wrong or that he was speaking of the fact that it is still hot when it reaches us, with some rhetoric.

Gregory of Nyssa: "And how does earth below form the foundation of the whole, and what is it that keeps it firmly in its place? what is it that controls its downward tendency?" (Answer to Eunomius’ Second Book) There is nothing pulling the earth "down".

Actually there is a down: inward towards the centre of the earth. But Mr Smartass is quoting a rhetorical question without continuing quote on to a probably as to physical details agnostic answer.

Basil: “the celestial bodies move in a circular course” (Nine Homilies of the Haxameron, Homily I ) No, they do not "move in a circular course". Again, they are ellipses. Geocentrists agree with that, do they not?

Circle very obviously is the word for orbit. It may even be a mistranslation for a word meaning circuit. The point is that the moon is in the orbit closest to earth - which even heliocentrics do not deny. And that the celestial bodies do not move in straight lines or zigzags, but in rounded courses of regular shape. Asking a Church Father to distinguish ellips from circle (they did not know the circles were ellipses, but would hardly have cared if they had) is like asking an Aaronitic priest to give the decimals for pi, instead of "three and some more". Which is as correct as the degree of accuracy goes, either of them.

Do you get your refutations from sites like BadAstronomy? Note "but that" ... where "that" may well refer to someone else's opinion, where "but" may well refer to his disagreement. Besides, is Hippolytus a Church Father?

Archelaus: “Then, again, the living Spirit created the luminaries, which are fragments of the soul" (Disputation with Manes, 22) The stars are "fragments of the soul"? Well, no, sorry.....St. Jerome thought the idea was idiotic.

And Bishop Tempier damned as heretical the saying that a star is moved by an inner principle, as an animal is moved by a soul. He did not condemn the position that stars are carried around by angels as lanterns carried by men, however. And, f y i, Archelaus is not a Church Father.** Besides, even if we had been, he was opposed by St. Jerome, and thus there would not have been any patristic consensus.

Have you weighed any heavenly body on a scale? Hardly. Jupiter may have a greater total weight, which we do not know, unless we tie our causes down to accepting only gravitation, inertia and mass as causes for heavenly bodies' movement, while accepting that on earth lanterns can move because there are in fact guys moving them. But Jupiter is clearly made of non-rocky stuff. However, on this view we do have a problem why there is rocky stuff well outside/above earth. Beats me. Admitted.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem states that the “firmament” is literally comprised of water. But modern geocentrists don’t believe that.

Funnily enough, spectral analysis has spotted water (=H2O) and "water-stuff"=H, (atomic or?)=H2 more than any other substance in "outer space". Which gave a Modern Scientist (i e believer in modern cosmology) who was also a Christian the right to ask "if the universe has no beginning, where does all the hydrogen come from?" - Dom Stanley Jaki, cited in Unwanted Priest.

The initial contrast between Pope Urban VIII and Popes from Benedict XIV to Benedict XVI is not quite backed up by the Honorius case. Because the Honorius case is a bit close to the "later-Popes-case" precisely insofar as Honorius too was a non-interventionist Pope.

We have one Pope condemning by officialising the decision of 1633, we have since not had any Pope condemning him for that, as Honorius was condemned, or even, up to John Paul II - whose Papacy is known to be disputed, and not only by rival claimants, not only by people believing Cardinal Siri was Pope (neither position of which I find horrible as such though I have taken distance from one or other of these rival claimants), but also by people with no agenda as to who is Pope, only a suspicion ranging to certainty in some cases - at least subjective such - that he was not a such.

Condemnations banning all heliocentric works were withdrawn after Aberration was discovered. I have not yet come across Bradley's complete reasoning. Here is wiki:

The aberration of light (also referred to as astronomical aberration or stellar aberration) is an astronomical phenomenon which produces an apparent motion of celestial objects about their real locations. It was discovered in 1725 and later explained by the third Astronomer Royal, James Bradley, who attributed it to the finite speed of light and the motion of Earth in its orbit around the Sun.[1][2]

This was about a century before discovering so called parallax. Question is: was Bradley right about this? When he thought the real locations were not moving as in the appearance, what was his rationale? Was he just assuming, without evidence, that gravitation and inertia, therefore mass, stand for all movements above us? In that case he added no disgrace on geocentrics who do believe angels move stars.

What was it CSL - you have him on the headpiece of your blog - quoted Owen Barfield as saying, again? Oh, I know Owen Barfield was esoteric, but so was Newton.

It is not enough to ask whether a particular theory has been abandoned, but one must ask oneself when it was disprove, by whom, and above all how thoroughly. Otherwise one can be despising a theory out of mere chronological snobbery.

Now, I do not believe geocentrism to be a part of the core of the Catholic Faith - I do not find it scandalous in people having not considered every aspect of Joshua's miracle to be heliocentrics. But as an ex-Lutheran, I believe a heliocentric take, either lowers the person doing the miracle in respect of knwing what he was doing, or makes him insincere, in a way very badly parallalled by non-demonic interpretations of Jesus' exorcisms in the New Testament. That theory was one pet peeve among Lutheran modernists, a k a Adaptation Theory - adapting message to capacity of hearers. That the word of truth - nil hoc veritatis verbo verius - certainly did not do. And I do not think he allowed Joshua to do so while doing that miracle either. And, as already stated, this is far from a central point of the faith or worthy of dogmatisation in itself, but involving attitudes where I think Galileo actually hinted at the Adaptation Theory about Biblical veracity, I think Urban VIII had a legitimate point. And it has not been infallibly reversed. None of the future Popes known to be such by all Roman Catholics ever used the forma extraordinaria in order to impose any real reversion of faith in the matter. They just washed their hands.

What was the Kabbalah?

Having rejected the true Messiah, and seen the temple who was his image destroyed by Titus, having seen Messianic hope after Messianic hope fail, being unable to apply all of the Torah in daily life, there were the Jews who wanted to know what the Torah was really about. Living as under King David? Sure, a fine thing. But it was Christians, it was we who whether goy or "goy" (=convert) confessed Jesus as the real and only Christ, who century after century had our king Davids, men like Justinian or Ina, Alfred or Charlemagne, Henry II of Germany or Louis IX of France (both Saints).

Some concluded that Messiah had come and the Christendom was his Messianic empire - rightly so. But what about those who refused this solution?

One approach was searching if the Torah has possibly a secret meaning.

I reveal no wellkept secret if I say part of the method was using anagrams, but more especially perigrams and endograms (keeping surrounding letters or in reverse adding letters within as if extant letters had been perigrams).

It took maybe - I am tempted to mythologise the attempt historically - centuries of boiling this verse or that passage or such a chapter down in exactly the right way, eliminating the wrong solutions as scientifically as possibly, maybe - this is what I think - applying results as rules of life for the proponents, applying them as magic, applying them as stratagems of war and diplomacy in relation to Christians, taking away every solution that failed, one after one.

People have gone mad in these attempts. People have gone to hell and damnation applying evil in this. Trial and error - the rule that Hannah Arendt supplied to Kant's "categoric imperative" but which Michel Onfray did not find in him - weeded out I suppose wrong attempt after wrong attempt to understand the Torah or even a little passage of it.

This or something like it, is what I suppose behind the achievement of a lifetime, the life of Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri. Having distilled down the Torah to fewer and fewer things, shorter and shorter versions, the quintessence of it has been concluded as a Hebrew phrase giving the anagram Yehoshua, at 2:25 of the video where I found it:

Yarim Ha'Am Veyokhiakh Shedvaro Vetorato Omdim

this equals=Yehoshua=Yeshua=Jesus

source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0DTT3u2JZ8

I have not been involved in this, but I admire it. For myself, finding Christ took a much simpler route. I could not be a yunquero, since, giving the "ocho apelidos" - the born family names of greatgrandfathers and greatgrandmothers - it would have included Swedish Jewry. Included, not consisted of entirely, mind you. Some great grand mother of mine was baptised for the love of some great grandfather of mine.

Now, for the translation of that phrase, it ends in: "that his word and his law are valid" or "is valid"

What about the word "and the humble shall possess the land"?

Well, the land that belongs to God, the land that is Jerusalem on high and not the one here below, is reserved, for God of course. And by God for the humble.

Is God following that law himself? Indeed, he is. He humbled himself by becoming man. And of angels, as of men, humble get up there, proud fall down or do not get up.

But has he proven the point in earthly matters too? Indeed, he has.

Monks have time after time, place after place chosen the utmost humility, and they have time after time, place after place ended up landlords. So much, indeed, that Protestant Reformations and diverse ideological Revolutions killed and chased away monks to get their lands. And Israel inhabitants cannot ignore that the vinyeards of Mount Carmel were bought from the Carmelite nuns who thereafter settled into some part or suburb of Cairo.

But that point was already made by Chesterton.

Let us go to History, not of monasteries but of languages.

What peoples did possess the land?

Greeks were not humble when acting under Gorgias and Antiochus Epiphanes. But some others were. And there they lost to the Maccabees and their allies of Rome and Sparta.

Alexander reached the Hindus or Ganges, because against Persians, Greeks had been the humble power, content to defend themselves and their freedoms again and again. Besides, when the Greeks in Ionia revolted against Persia, they did so by the pious act of destroying an idolatrous temple. Wiccans should take heed, Diana Temple burners defeated Diana Temple defenders. Same place where later St Paul attacked the cult of Diana, without even setting torch to her temple himself.

But Rome eclipsed Greece. She traces her remote origins back to Aeneas the Pious. A man content to follow the voice of whatever appeared to him as divine powers. Maybe he was even led by God, and the Pagan divinites that appear in the Aeneid are just other people, more idolatrous than he, who interpreted his gestures wrongly. He left a woman - even to commit suicide, God preserve me from being cruel even unwillingly or unwittingly to that point - and he who had carried his father on his back also left him behind for the sake of obeying paternal orders.

Rome was humbled by Etruscans. Rome was humbled by Brennus. Rome was humbled, and militarily speaking on her knees, when Hannibal was Ante Portas. And she won the world.

Caesar was a Popular, not an Optimate, he was humbly content to depend on support from humble people. And Caesar means emperor, but Cicero only means tourist guide, even though that splendid speaker once was Pater Patrie.

Latin and Greek no longer quite divide the Mediterranean, do they?

I was going to look into the list where English is today the largest language. But by native speakers, Mandarin, Spanish and English are the top three, and English is only third. Do Chinese sons obey their fathers humbly? I think they do (or did up to the one child policy). Do Spaniards and Hispanics content themselves with depending on priests, rather than read for themselves, as the Children of Israel did back when the Torah was read once every seven years to the people by the High Priests? I think they do. And are Anglophones content to trust the Bible rather than the scientists? Believe me, a Creationist in Paris is sometimes mistaken for being an English Only Speaker, even if he is a Swedish Polyglot.

But let us return to the other list, total number of speakers. Imposing ones language on others as a lingua franca is also an inheriting of the land.

Interestingly, according to this source, adding Native and Secondary speakers still leaves Mandarin on top. So, here goes a site, where the list I expected is not very immediately available:

http://www2.ignatius.edu/faculty/turner/languages.htm

After weighing six factors (number of primary speakers, number of secondary speakers, number and population of countries where used, number of major fields using the language internationally, economic power of countries using the languages, and socio-literary prestige), Weber compiled the following list of the world's ten most influential languages (number of points given in parentheses):

English (37)
French (23)
Spanish (20)
Russian (16)
Arabic (14)
Chinese (13)
German (12)
Japanese (10)
Portuguese (10)
Hindi/Urdu (9)

And I will deal with top three, mainly. How have the humble inherited the land in the case of English, French and Spanish speakers?

When were the English humble?

When the English landlords, dispossessed by the Normans, forgave them. See History of the English People by John Richard Green. (Looking for reference in the longer work, online - http://o-x.fr/4o2p0 - maybe should have consulted the shorter one.)

If Belloc is right, they were humble also when becoming English instead of British, most of them, adopting the language of the conqueror as soon as conquering monarch was a Christian.

Even if he was not right, heritages occurred that let the English inherit some of the merits of the Britons: including King Arthur's humility. The one where he pardoned his adulterous wife.

Also, they were humble when accepting the rule, if not quite the language of Danes, under the exact same condition: as soon as Knut was a Christian.

Also, King John humbled himself to the Pope to get rid of Magna Charta, which succeeded, and similarily a Danish King humbled himself to the Pope to get rid of one Holy Roman Emperor (a Stauffer at that time).

Also, the humble classes rose to replace the more posh speakers of French - a process which was not at all foreseen by the English who forgave the Norman. It happened between the Black Death and getting Beaten by St Joan of Arc. That way English was founded. Nobles speaking Anglonorman left their places to heirs or newcomers able to speak only English and add some Anglonorman words for the occasions that English dialect did not provide words for. Secretaries speaking Anglonorman were replaced with lowlier men who spoke English plus added some French vocabulary. Once England no longer had a claim on France, or no longer tried to make it happen, this victory of St Joan of Arc (delayed by some twenty years) made English the language of its own country.

So true, as the French right has been saying: once they were off French ground, she probably even prayed for them.

Just as the Irish did when centuries of English occupation ended.

But was St Joan of Arc humble? Did she not claim to hear voices from Heaven?

Yes, but apart from believing them, she depended totally on the Church for her religion.

And - we are considering French now - were the French humble to resist the English?

A little less, of course, than the English to the Normans. But then again, St Joan of Arc was, it seems, also defending the Catholic faith and the Christian society - since at her time, there were already Lollards and anticlericals among the English.

"But we will fight for our lives and our laws" - as Judas Maccabeus said. Norman invaders settled for ruling the land after the laws of King Edward. English invaders in France did not quite settle for any really legal and loyal arrangement.

But before that, France was humle enough to take Latin lessons from an Englishman. That was how she started writing French.

Here is the story.

Ausonius would have said a thing like "the son made five steps to our slave and then stopped" like: "filius fecit quinque passus ad nostru(m) servu(m), et post quievit."

Some a bit less posh would have said: "ille filios fechet chinque passos a nostro servo e post se adrestavet".

A Frankish invader would have pronounced the accented syllables a bit heavier than his subjects: "ELL-e FIL-ios FECH-et CHINK-e PASS-os a NOST-ro SERV-o, e POST se ar-re-STA-vet" or even "se ar-re-STAAT".

A bit before they were about to reduce it completely to "el fils fist cinq pas a nostre serf, e pos s'arrestaa" they were realising they had become lousy at pronouncing Latin.

But in neighbouring England, they pronounced Latin after the letter: "filius fecit quinque passus ad nostrum servum, et post quievit" (pronouncing final m's, as separate consonants, since English did not nasalise vowels, only difference from Ausonius). So an English monk, Alcuin, was introduced to teach French priests how to pronounce Latin. He did.

After that, when the priests no longer pronounced Latin as it was spoken in France, the people no longer understood them, and they had to translate the Latin to what the people spoke. That is how they started writing according to the pronunciation of what was now no longer acknowledged as Latin but as Rustic Romance Tongue. French was born.

I know Greeks who are loth to admit that Katharevousa pronounced as Dhimotokee but preserving older spellings, forms and words, is not quite the Koinee Dialectos it used to be.

But I think this suffices about how English and French linguistically are proof he gave that his word is valid as to "the humble shall possess the earth". I even forgot about the Spanish and being humbled by both Visigoth before their conversion and Arab before their expulsion.

He also said, after taking bread in his hands, this is my flesh. Not only is there a perfect conformity between the Eucharist as Sacrifice of the New Covenant, making His Name Holy among the Gentiles, and His Sacrifice on the Cross as fulfilling all Aaronitic sacrifices that went before it.

But also, he has proven it by giving Ezechiel, the witness of bones getting flesh and bodies resurrecting, a scroll to eat. The Word made flesh, who makes bread unto himself for us to eat, if we do it in fear and remembrance of him, judging first ourselves, for our salvation, and if we do it otherwise, for our judgement, is the same Word of which the Torah is an extract.

How is the Torah most valid? If the scroll is eaten by the faithful, as Ezechiel ate it? Or if learned men invent and learned men apply Replacement Mitzvoth, doing this thing because that other thing was made impossible in year 70?

Tablets of Stone, and Scrolls of Vellum
Flesh and Blood, Bread and Wine,
For the sake of man's salvation
Hold the same text, the Word Divine.

So, if Jews would please respect the conclusion of the one they called Rabbi, the conclusion of Yitzshak Kaduri, that the Messiah corresponds to a text, the Hebrew acronym of which is transcribed in our language as Jesus, and respect the fact that I had better reasons than the Kabbalah to believe this, since I was raised by my faithful and pious mother, maybe I could start once again living as a Christian, which has all this time been my faith and belief. Now it has been years since I was unmolested by diverse hindrances, some of which were put in place by men, on living according to my Christian conscience. It has been years, I have had the right, once again, after relinquishing it temporarily by a pledge, to desire marriage. But men of the Church have acted as if I had no such right or were not capable of living marriage or some other excuse for trampling on my rights. And, sorry, I cannot but suspect, Jews were involved in such intrigues behind my back. Jews who wanted me to marry no Catholic, but a Jewess, or at least one whose Catholicism was to be judged by some Jewish standard which I do not acknowledge.

Source:
http://hglundahlsblog.blogspot.com/2009/10/pseudoquote-identified-what-de-romano.html

http://gmb1lou.blogspot.com/2008/11/qqs-annotations-au-manuel-dathologie.html
et il ne l'a pas fait. Je viens de renouveler l'invitation:
http://hglundahlsblog.blogspot.com/2011/09/reflections-sur-dominique-resch-son.html

Dixit FOG*:

http://triv7quadriv.blogspot.com/2011/12/gloria-deo-pax-terrae.html
